Aim and scope

Our research purposes for FY2024-2028 are as follows:

1. Issues still remain particularly on the transition processes between tropical depressions, tropical cyclones including typhoons, subtropical cyclones, and extratropical cyclones in views of the interaction between convection and vortex and the structural changes between asymmetric and axisymmetric structures. One of our goals is to elucidate the dynamical and thermodynamic processes involved in these transition processes and to clarify their relationship to factors that causes the errors of tropical cyclone predictions.
2. The other goal is to establish the methodology to analyze and predict typhoons as an areal distribution, instead of the conventional point-based information such as maximum sustained wind speeds.

Our team will also continue to conduct early analysis for typhoons that have seriously impacted society.
