Laboratory Overview

Aiming at improving current JMA earthquake early warning (EEW), techniques for rapid and precise prediction of ground motion are studied for not only high frequency (short period) but also low frequency (long period) ground motion. Prediction of seismic intensity, which is given by short period ground motion, is important for human sensation and damage of low-rise buildings, while that of long period ground motion is crucial for high-rise buildings. We are now constructing a new method for EEW, in which current wavefield is monitored in real time, and then expansion of future wavefield is predicted. This new method enables us to predict the ground motion even for large extent of source rupture and/or multiple simultaneous events.
