Jan. 1942The Central Meteorological Observatory Research Division was established.
Oct. 1945The Central Meteorological Observatory Research Division was moved to Koenji (Mabashi), Suginami, Tokyo.
Apr. 1947The Meteorological Research Institute was reorganized into two Administrative Divisions and 10 Research Laboratories.
June 1949Reorganized and associated with the Central Meteorological Observatory.
June 1956Reorganized and associated with the Japan Meteorological Agency, with one Administrative Department and 9 Research Divisions with 23 Research Laboratories.
May 1972Enlarged into one Office of Planning, two Adminstrative Divisions and 9 Research Divisions with 26 Laboratories.
Apr. 1977Expanded to 27 Laboratories.
June 1980The entire Institute was moved to Tsukuba Science City.
May 1987The Climate Research and the Meteorological Satellite and Observation System Research Divisions were established.
Apr. 1997The Atmospheric Environment and Applied Meteorology Research Department was established

May 1972Cabinet decision to create a city for research institutions and educational organizations at Tsukuba.
1973-1974Construction of the Meteorological Observation Tower, the Aerological Observatory, and the Meteorological Instruments Plant.
Fiscal 1975-1978Main MRI building and other facilities completed.
