Mission Statement

The mission of the Second Research Laboratory, the Typhoon Research Department is to clarify various phenomena associated with tropical cyclones (TCs) mainly through observational and analytical studies. At present we are engaged in improvement of intensity estimation of TCs, together with elucidation of processes of their rapid intensification and structure change.

Current R&D themes

  • Developing TC intensity estimation method using various satellite data and operational Doppler radar observation, aimed at improving operational TC analysis of Japan Meteorological Agency
  • Elucidating processes of TC intensity/structure change through observational and analytical studies, along with sensitivity experiments using high-resolution nonhydrostatic numerical model
