3 Purposes

  • Recent progress in numerical weather prediction systems enables us to improve the track predictions of typhoons. In addition to the improvement of the track predictions, however, detailed information for every region associated with typhoon intensities such as strong winds and heavy precipitations is expected for defending (and mitigating) human lives and assets from natural disasters caused by typhoons.

  • Next-generation meso-scale numerical weather prediction system with a few times higher horizontal resolution than the present system is planning to operate after a lapse of several years due to the advancement of computational resources. Under the circumstances, our research group is going on a study on environmental factors affecting typhoon intensity in order to improve both track and intensity predictions more precisely and to provide high-accurate and proper information associated with disaster prevention to peoples.

  • To achieve this goal, we investigate the following topics;

    (1) Development of the method on typhoon intensity estimate for improving initial conditions for typhoon predictions particularly over the ocean where in situ observations are sparse.

    (2) Examination of optimum observations for typhoons to improve the initial environmental field in the vicinity of typhoons.

    (3) Understanding the mechanism of strong wind and heavy precipitation accompanied by typhoons to identify the problems in the typhoon forecasting system.

    (4) Analysis of the tropical thermal environment with a global data assimilation system.

4 Objectives

  1. General Objective

    The general objective of this study is to establish the basic theory for the improvement of typhoon intensity prediction over the next several years through the investigation into the estimate of typhoon strength and the environmental factors that affect typhoon intensity.

      • "Improve the accuracy of typhoon intensity forecasts through statistical analyses and some case studies using the prevailing intensity-estimation methods, which are based on observational data of micro-wave sensors on satellites."
    • (Subproject 2)Optimum observations for typhoons
      • "Improve the initial environmental field in the vicinity of typhoons using targeted observations and satellite data to obtain better forecast performance. Investigate the feasibility of sensitivity analysis guidance using data from operational numerical weather prediction."
    • (Subproject 3)Understanding the mechanism of strong wind and heavy precipitation accompanied by typhoons
