[Japanese]

The Seismology and Volcanology Research Department is composed of four research laboratories where altogether nineteen researchers prosecute studies of earthquake generating mechanism, prediction of disastrous intraplate earthquake (especially Tokai, To-nankai, and Nankai earthquake), prediction of volcanic eruption, machinery, tools and system used in the observation of earthquakes and volcanic activities, and generation and propagation of Tsunami and estimation of the height at seashore. Since the beginning of the National Program of Earthquake Prediction and Prediction of Volcanic Eruption, our findings have contributed greatly to JMA's monitoring of seismic and volcanic activities.
