The 2nd Research Laboratory
Atmospheric Boundary Layer
General characteristics of the atmospheric boundary layer are
investigated with field observations and laboratory experiments. In the
field observation, evaluation of surface heat budget components is
conducted by analyzing data obtained through continuous measurements of
wind, temperature and water vapor at several heights with different
platforms in the MRI. Observation of heat budget and analysis of heat
budget components with routine data are also conducted in Tibetan
Plateau, China On the other hand, the large meteorological wind tunnel
with the apparatus of thermal and velocity stratifications is used to
investigate fundamental structures and characteristics of turbulent
flow.

Example of evaluation of heat
budget elements:
Measurement of night-time latent heat flux with specially-designed
dewfall meter. Amount of dewfall deposited on styrofoam with a diameter
of 1.2m is measured as change of water depth.

Example of wind tunnel experiment:
Bricks (10cm~21cm~6cm) are placed on the floor of the test section of
wind tunnel (18m~3m~2m).
